Android Tablet To Bypass iPad Shipment In 2013

It looks like the iPad domination is about to end in 2013. Analyst is predicting that Android Tablet shipment will overwhelm iPad shipment in late 2013.

A growing variety of smaller and cheaper Android tablets from Google to Amazon.com Inc will catch on this year with more consumers and chip away at Apple's dominance since the first iPad launched in 2010, International Data Corp said.

HP enters tablet market with Slate

The rumored HP entry into the tablet market is now a reality. HP Slate was announced during MWC 2013. The price ? $169. Availability ? April 2013.

The Slate will run a 1.6-GHz, dual-core ARM Cortex A9 processor and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. There's 3-megapixel rear-facing camera and a VGA camera on the front. HP also touted the embedded Beats Audio and the HP ePrint app for home and on-the-go printing. A micro USB port allows for the transfer of files. 

HP is offering a two-year HP Care Pack warranty for $29 or a two-year HP Care Pack with Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) for $49.

It is pretty standard features on the hardware side. The top selling point however, is its printing capability. Unfortunately it is still untested. As noted in another PC Magazine article:

The tablet's most impressive feature was one I wasn't able to use. (Isn't that always the way?) It prints. 

This isn't just HP's downloadable ePrint app. According to HP's senior vice president of mobile, Alberto Torres, printing is plumbed into the OS so you can print from a range of different applications. You'll be able to print via Wi-Fi or, even more excitingly, by plugging your tablet directly into a printer with a USB cable. 

"We know that one of the pain points from users in the mobile world is the ability to print," Torres said. "That's something we're definitely going to be addressing in a lot of ways." 

Torres didn't have details on which printers could be plugged directly into the tablet, but said it wouldn't just be HP models. A list of supported printers will be available soon, he said, and other future HP tablets would share these capabilities.

Wikipad Gaming Tablet Coming Spring 2013

Most tablets usage are for entertainment purposes, such as watching movies and playing games. Good news for gamers, Wikipad has announced its 7-inch Android Tablet with gamepad. While it is nothing new, with Archos GamePad already available in Europe and coming to the US soon, it is still a great device.

The scratch-resistant display on the Wikipad 7-inch will feature 16:10 IPS screen with five-point multitouch, but it’s the controller that’s the real star of the show. At just 0.4-inches thick and weighing a mere 0.7 pounds, you’ll definitely be able to take your games on the road, assuming they run on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). In fact, users will have access to entertainment content from PlayStation Mobile, Big Fish Games, TegraZone, the Google Play store, OnLive and others.

Launch price is $249, so it is within budget limit. A 10-inch tablet version was delayed after missing its October 2012 expected release date. It is still in the works, though no release date are available.

 "We wanted to get Wikipad into our community's hands and what we found was that the smaller 7-inch form factor just seemed right," said Fraser Townley (PDF), President of Sales, Wikipad, Inc. "The smaler frame delivers an aggressiv price while keeping the same amazing specs [as the 10-inch]." 

Wikipad, Inc. tells Maximum PC that the 10-inch model is still on the company's roadmap and that its specs might change by the time it debuts, but beyond that, all lips were sealed.

Kobo Arc

Kobo Arc is Kobo 2nd attempt at tablet PC. Much like Amazon Kindle Fire, it have a custom skin over Android OS powering the tablet, called Tapestries.

It’s called Tapestries, and it breaks down your content on the device into categories like books, music and social and puts it in folder-like shortcuts on your screen. When you activate a Tapestry folder, it takes you to another screen that is immediately filled with your books, video, or your social networks. It sounds simple, but it’s such an interesting way to get at your content. 

One of the most frustrating things for new Android users is where all their stuff is being stored on the device. Is it in Gallery? File Manager? Can I search for it? With Tapestries, those questions are rendered moot.

Considering that Kobo is geared towards ebook, this is no surprise. As for the specs, it comes with dual core 1.5GHz processor, 1GB of RAM and Android 4.0 ICS powering the device. The screen is 7-inch, 1280 x 800, IPS display. Similar to the screen powering Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD.

The price ? Kobo Arc 16GB is available for $199, while the 32GB at $249 and 64GB at $299. Very friendly price for the specs.

Android Tablet sales beat iPad in Japan

Google Nexus 7 beats the iPad in a recent survey done in Japan. Price is a major factor voiced by customers surveyed.

The report cites a survey from Japanese market research firm BCN, which contacted 2,400 stores across Japan. According to the survey, Google’s Nexus 7 tablet, manufactured by Asus, made up 44.4% of of all tablet sales by volume in December. Apple’s iPad tablets only accounted for 40.1% of December sales. It should be noted that Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets were not included in the survey, “as these devices are primarily sold online.” The larger retailers surveyed, however, cited the Kindle Fire as the third best-selling tablet in their stores. 

The publication cites the lower price of the Nexus 7 as a large selling point for the tablet. It also points to the iPad Mini as a possible factor in Apple’s lower iPad sales, and the fact that Apple fans may have already bought the newest version of the iPad when it debuted in November.

MSI Enjoy 71

Major PC manufacturer are moving their focus from PC to Tablets. This includes MSI from Taiwan. MSI is known for producing motherboards and also laptops. It is a competitor to Asus and Acer, whom are also PC manufacturers.

MSI has announced Enjoy 71 tablet, priced around $170 and available in Taiwan only for now.

The MSI Enjoy 71 tablet runs on Android Ice Cream Sandwich, which is a slight downfall because Jelly Bean would have been the way to go. Some of the specs are reasonable considering it comes with a 7-inch IPS Capacitive multi-touch LED 1024 x 600 pixel display and a 1.5 GHz Amlogic AM8726 dual core processor. 

The main specs include 1GB DDR3 RAM, 2MP Rear Camera as well as a low 0.3MP on the front, for storage it has 8GB of built-in memory, which is the average for affordable Android tablets. It also has Audio jack, micro-USB, mini-HDMI, Wi-Fi, microSD up to 32GB, Built-in Speakers and microphone, 3200mAh Rechargeable Lithium battery, as well as G-Sensor Accelerometer and up to 4 hours video playback.

It looks like the desktop PC dominance is going to end with major manufacturers shifting to Tablets.

Sub $150 tablet from Samsung

Not to be outdone by Google Nexus 7, Acer and Asus; Samsung is building a sub $150 tablet to complement its already successful Galaxy tablet series.

Now the second half of this rumor, Samsung is said to be working on a Nexus 7 competitor as well. We’ve already seen a ton of 7-inch Android tablets in the $200 price range, including the Acer Iconia B1, and the ASUS MeMO Pad ME172V. Now it looks like Samsung is getting ready to join in. Reports suggest that their 7-inch tablet will cost between $149-199 depending on the memory configuration. Currently, details are very scarce, but we should know more in the next few days at the rate these rumors are flying around. Could this be the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0?

Hyundai T7

Hyundai is a Korea brand that is known for its automotive products. That is about to change. Hyundai is launching a new tablet, Hyundai T7. It is priced at $166 and can lasts up to four hours on a single charge.

Hyundai have launched a new tablet this month called the Hyundai T7, which they have equipped with NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, supported by Mali 400 graphics, and 1GB of RAM. 

The Hyundai T7 Quad Core Android tablet is also fitted with a 5-point multitouch capacitive touch display sporting a a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution and 178 degree viewing angles. 

Other features of the Hyundai T7 tablet include 2MP rear camera, and 0.3MP front facing camera, 1 x HDMI port, 1 x microUSB port, together with G-sensor, GPS,  with Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, all running Google’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) operating system.

Transform Your Kindle Fire into Full Android Tablet

Got a Kindle Fire 2 ? Want an Android Tablet with Google Play Store ? Now you can transform your Kindle Fire into an Android Tablet 4.2 Jelly Bean. Thanks to CynanogenMod 10.1.

Some features are not performing well, as noted by Ubergizmo:

The thing is, the Kindle Fire 2 is not the fastest tablet on the block, so that kind of defeats the purpose, but at least it opens up options to the masses. Be warned though, CyanogenMod 10.1 for the Kindle Fire 2 will not support hardware video acceleration, meaning you cannot stream HD video from YouTube and Netflix, and you will also experience a higher battery drain during sleep while your headset microphones remain gimped.

Also remember, by using custom ROM such as CynanogenMod, you are voiding your warranty. There is always one possibility of "bricking" your tablet. So, upgrade at your own risk.

Archos 80 Titanium contender for Apple Mini

The iPad Mini is Apple's answer to the growing 7-inch tablet PC market. Now, Archos 80 Titanium is challenging the iPad Mini. According to CNET :

The tablet houses a 1.6GHz dual-core processor, a quad-core graphics processor, and 1GB of RAM. It sports a stylish aluminum back casing and a 1,024x768-pixel resolution IPS screen. 

The 80 Titanium also comes with 8GB of internal storage with a microSD expansion slot, a 0.3-megapixel front camera, and 2-megapixel rear camera. It also has Micro-USB and Mini-HDMI ports. 

The Archos 8-inch tablet will possibly compete against the iPad Mini. Its stylish, lightweight design and 1,024x768-pixel-resolution IPS screen are comparable with the iPad Mini's, but the 80 Titanium costs considerably less.

 The price will be $169, with availability this April. The tablet will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. So it is not too far behind the leading 4.2.1 Jelly Bean.

Google Play on new Coby Tablet

Google Play is the go-to Android app store. Having an Android tablet with no access to Google Play is like living in a remote area with no communications. Coby Electronics is releasing a Google Play enabled 7-inch Android Tablet.

The MID7065 features a 1.2-GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, and a front-facing 0.3MP camera. The device includes 8GB of flash storage with a microSD Card slot that lets you expand that up to 32GB.

The MID0765 is the latest Android tablet from Coby. And it will have Google Play available right on the tablet. Its price is set at $149.

It is still running Android 4.0, so some Google features such as Google Now will be missing.

E-Fun Nextbook 8GP

Together with the Nextbook 7GP, E-Fun is releasing an 8-inch version, the Nextbook 8GP. It is set to be available in February for $170.

Like the 7 inch model, the Nextbook 8GP has a 1.5 GHz dual core CPU, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of built-in storage as well as a microSD card slot for up to 32GB of additional space. 

It has front and rear cameras, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, and HDMI output. E Fun says the tablet measures 0.37 inches thick and has an IPS display with wide viewing angles, but there’s no mention of the actual screen resolution.

Here are three very good cheap budget Android tablet choices for you to consider:

The Kindle Fire, priced at $199, is Amazon’s Android-based tablet. Archos is a brand that go together with cheap. Archos announced the 97 Titanium HD tablet. It is promising Retina like display. No price is announced yet.

Aside from a kooky moniker, the company's forthcoming slab features a 9.7-inch 2,048 x 1,536 IPS display, a 1.6GHz dual-core A9 processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, microSD support (up to 64GB), a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

$99 Nexus tablet leak

Now, there is a photo over at Picasa showcasing the camera picture taken from the rumored ME172V 7-inch tablet. The ME172V is made by Asus and is expected to be priced at $99. The magic price for Android tablet.

It looks like the first photos taken with this $99 Asus device (model number ME172V) have hit Picasa already, and while EXIF data could be faked, we will point out the fact that we’ve seen plenty of unofficial device confirmations coming from Google’s image-sharing service so far this year. 

The posted images have a resolution of 1280 x 720 and come from an “Asus Asus” Picasa account. Is it all a coincidence that we’re seeing them hit the web in late December or is Asus preparing its CES 2013 attack?

Nexus 10 From Third Party More Expensive ?

If you are interested in owning Google Nexus 10, well good news. Now the tablet is also available from third party retailers, not exclusive to Google Play Store. It does come with a hefty price tag though.

If you’re interested in Google Nexus 10, third-party online stores are currently selling the two WiFi-only Nexus 10 variants with a slightly more expensive price tag. The Samsung Nexus 10 with 16GB storage and WiFi-only is $490 to $500 each, while the 32GB top-end WiFi-only model costs $590 to $600.
For comparison, the Google Play Store is offering the Google Nexus 10 16GB storage and WiFi only for just $399 each, while the 32GB WiFi-only variant sports $499 price tag.
